Instagram Launches School Partnership Program to Fast-Track Moderation Reports
SOCIAL MEDIA
Instagram has introduced a new School Partnership Program designed to expedite the review of moderation reports submitted by verified school accounts. This initiative, currently available to middle and high schools across the U.S., aims to enhance teen safety by providing schools with a direct reporting channel to flag posts or accounts that may violate Instagram’s guidelines.
How It Works
Schools participating in the program can report safety concerns — including instances of bullying — directly to Instagram. These reports are automatically given priority for review, ensuring quicker action. Schools will also receive real-time updates on any decisions made regarding their reports.
Identification and Resources
Schools in the program will display a “school partner” banner on their profiles, indicating their active participation. Additionally, Instagram will provide educational resources for educators, parents, guardians, and students, offering tips on safe social media use.
Collaborations and Expansion
Over the past year, Instagram tested this initiative with 60 schools, working alongside organizations like the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). Other U.S. schools can now join the waitlist to participate in the program.
Context and Legislative Pressure
This move comes as lawmakers push for stricter online safety regulations. The Kids Off Social Media Act (KOSMA), which would prohibit children under 13 from using social media, is gaining momentum. Additionally, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) have passed the U.S. Senate.
Instagram has also implemented other safety features, including private accounts for users under 16, enhanced parental controls, and messaging restrictions to create a safer online environment.
With the School Partnership Program, Instagram hopes to empower educators and promote responsible online behavior, offering a proactive approach to maintaining a safer platform for teens.
