North Korea is reportedly forming a new cyber warfare unit within its intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB). According to a recent report by Daily NK, the new division, named Research Center 227, will focus on advancing offensive hacking technologies.

Citing an internal source, the report states that Research Center 227 will conduct in-depth research on Western cybersecurity infrastructure and computer networks. The unit aims to enhance the regime’s ability to steal digital assets, develop AI-driven cyber-espionage techniques, and coordinate with North Korean overseas hacking groups.

North Korean hackers have been linked to numerous high-profile cyberattacks in recent years, including the massive $1.4 billion hack of Bybit, a cryptocurrency exchange. These cyber operations have been a key source of illicit revenue for the regime.

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have previously accused the RGB of carrying out cyber espionage and hacking campaigns targeting global financial institutions, infrastructure, and governments. With the formation of Research Center 227, North Korea appears to be further strengthening its cyber warfare capabilities.
