SAN JOSE, California, March 20 (Reuters) - Nvidia (NVDA.O) has announced plans to establish a quantum computing research lab in Boston. The Nvidia Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC) will collaborate with researchers from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to advance the field of quantum computing. CEO Jensen Huang made the announcement during Nvidia's annual software developer conference in San Jose, California.

The new center will partner with key players in the quantum computing space, including Quantinuum, Quantum Machines, and QuEra Computing. Nvidia plans for the center to begin operations later this year.

The announcement comes after Huang's previous comments in January, suggesting that practical quantum computers were still 20 years away. However, during the conference, he moderated his stance, acknowledging the industry's progress.

“This is the first event in history where a company CEO invites all of the guests to explain why he was wrong,” Huang joked onstage, as he was joined by executives from various quantum computing firms.

While fully functional quantum computers remain a long-term goal, some companies are finding ways to generate revenue from quantum technology through early-stage applications. Nvidia's new lab aims to accelerate this progress by fostering collaboration and innovation in the rapidly evolving field.

Stay tuned for further updates on Nvidia's contributions to the future of quantum computing as the NVAQC opens its doors and begins its groundbreaking research later this year.
